NLPSC’s BSCrim is Top 3 Performing School in Region 1

                The College of Criminal Justice Education of North Luzon Philippines Sate College (NLPSC) has recently received a certificate of Recognition from the Professional Criminologist Association of the Philippines, Inc. (PCAP) for being the Top 3 Performing School in Region 1 last October 2016.

                The college’s Bachelor of Criminology (BSCrim) garnered a passing rate of 59.68% (51 and above category).

                The institutional passing rate is 52.70 % as compared to the national passing rate of 31.35%

The prestigious award was received by the faculty members of BS Criminology department of NLPSC, Jhana T. Aromin, program chair of BSCrim, Aurelyn S. Mina and Donabelle D. Banasen on December 16, 2016 during the Joint Oath-taking and induction Ceremony for new Criminologist at Oasis Country Resort, City of San Fernando La Union.  

                The certificate of recognition was personally handed by Dr. Ambroiso P. Detran, director of PCAP Region 1, Dr. Jetreel B. Vicente, PCAP vice president for Luzon and Dr. Gerry J. Cano, PCAP national president.

NLPSC's graduate lands top 10 in LET board exams

Lord Angelo M. Diana, a magna cum laude graduate of North Luzon Philippines State College, landed 10 in the September 2016 Licensure Examination for Teachers (LET).

Diana, a resident of Calimugtong, Galimuyod, Ilocos Sur, and the son of storeowners Edwin and Mryna, is the newest teacher-celebrity from NLPSC.

In an interview, Diana said that faith, focus and determination were his keys that brought him to succeed. He is also thankful of NLPSC for giving to him substantial education. He is happy and proud to say that he is a product of NLPSC which truly manifest the culture of excellence in teaching.

Against the national passing rate of 30.18% for the Elementary level, the institutional passing rate of NLPSC is 61.73%. In the Secondary level, the institutional passing rate is 67.19% as compared to the national passing rate of 33.78%.

Intellectual Property (IP) Forum for Higher Education Institutions

The Commission on Higher education (CHED), through a project lead by Angeles University Foundation conducted Intellectual Property Forum in support to HEI research initiatives held at the Sports and Cultural Center, Angeles University Foundation, Angeles City on October 27 – 28, 2015. The “Intellectual Property (IP) Forum for HEI Top Management” was attended by Dr. Severino G. Alviento, Director for Research and Extension while Dr. Andres T. Malinnag. Jr., Director for Administrative and Finance Services, attended the “Intellectual Property (IP) Foundation Course for HEI Researchers”.

During the first day of the forum, Dr. Joseph Emmanuel L. Angeles President of Angeles University Foundation and Dr. Napoleon K. Juanillo, Jr. Director, Office of Planning, Research and Knowledge Management of CHED, gave their welcome address.

Meanwhile, Dr. Roberto C. Pagulayan discussed the statement of purpose and acknowledgement of guests and participants.

Speakers during the forum and gave lecture were Atty. Carmelita Yadao-Sison, Director of CHED’s Legal and Legislative Services; Atty. Allan Gepty, OIC, Director-General of Intellectual Property Office-Philippines and Support to Academic Research. Also Atty. Javier P. Flores, discussed the Copyright in the Academic Setting; Dr. Jonathan Salvacion of MAPUA shares the ITSO and academe experience. On the other hand Dr. Ropberto C. Pagulayan lectured on the CHED-IPO-Phl-PASUC agreement.

It was explained in the forum that the primary purpose of IP policy in the HEIs is to provide protection and incentives to encourage both the discovery and development of new knowledge and its transfer for public benefit. Also, to enhance the generation of revenue for the HEIs and creators; to optimize the environment and incentives for research and for the creation of new knowledge at the HEIs; to bring the results of research and scholarship into practical use for the public benefit as quickly and effectively as possible; and to protect the interests/rights of faculty, staff, and students through their investment in research and scholarship.

The Faculty Association spearheads Advocacy Campaign and Gift-Giving Program

The NLPSC Faculty Association (FA) in cooperation with the College of Teacher Education (CTE), College of Business Education (CTE) and the College of Arts and Sciences (CAS) sponsored an Advocacy Campaign and Gift-Giving Outreach Program at Sitio Mindanao, Amguid, Candon City, Ilocos Sur on December 22, 2015.

The activity featured lectures on Health Education by Mrs. Amelia C. Antonio, the FA Vice President; Values Education by Mr. Samson C. Nisperos, the FA PRO; Entrepreneurship by Miss Vicky C. Albayalde, CBE faculty; and a cooking demonstration by Mr. Santos Sanchez with the assistance of Bachelor of Science in Business Administration (BSBA) students.

This extension activity was conducted to reach out to the indigent families of Sitio Mindanao, one of the three sitios of barangay.

Sitio MIndanao is located on top of the mountain, a half-an-hour nerve-wracking trip away from Palacapac, Candon City. Since the area is mountainous, folks in the sitio do not have lands to till, thus, they just depend their living in gathering root crops that are available within the vicinity. Because of this depressed condition of the people, the barangay captain of Amguid, Mr. Romeo Del Rosario, expressed his sincere appreciation to the joint efforts of the North Luzon Philippines College as a whole for its benevolence and generosity in choosing the sitio as the beneficiaries of the program. He also expressed his hopes that the group will come back in the next years for the same purpose.

The highlight of the program was the distribution of gift items to the 43 households of the sitio. A simple delight was also prepared for the children by facilitating parlor games for them to play.

Present during the program were the barangay officials headed by Mr. Del Rosario, and the barangay health worker of Amguid. Among the NLPSC team present were the FA officers with the President, Mrs. Maribel C. Ibanez, faculty members of the CBE with the Dean, Mrs. Nora H. Soliven; faculty members of the CAS with the Dean, Dr. Severino G. Alviento; and faculty members of the CTE.

The HuSoCom Department sponsors Gift-Giving Outreach Program

The Humanities, Social Sciences and Communication (HuSoCom) Department conducted a Gift-Giving Outreach Program at Sitio Kinayad, Kinmarin, Salcedo, ILocos Sur on December 19, 2015 as a part of the extension activity of the department.

This activity was conducted in response to the request of Mrs. Librada Habon, the Teacher-in-Charge of Kinayad Elementary School, where the gift-giving program was held.

This activity was spearheaded by the HuSoCom Students Organization (HSO) officers led by its President, Mr. Anthony Carlo Valdez and the HuSoCom faculty members led by the Dean, Dr. Severino G. Alviento.

The group traversed the steep and winding road towards the small community to bring simple gift items to the school children of Kinayad and the indigent families of the village. They arrived at the venue after an hour trek and they were welcomed by the beneficiaries of the program.

Sitio Kinayad is a sitio of barangay Kinmarin, a depressed community of the municipality of Salcedo. According to the barangay officials present during the program, the North Luzon Philippines (NLPSC) represented by the HuSoCom Department was the first to conduct such activity in their village. To reciprocate the good deed extended to them, the villagers prepared a simple but bountiful banquet as a sign of their gratitude. The school children also prepared intermission numbers where they explicitly showed their gratefulness to the NLPSC team.

The 27 pupils of the school and the 29 indigent families in the barangay all received Christmas presents in the program. The school also got a modest amount of cash donation from the Department to be used for any project of their desire.

The Chairperson of the HuSocom Department, Mrs. Maribel C. Ibanez, in her talk, thanked the sponsors of the activity namely the NLPSC administration, the Municipality of Salcedo, and the Provincial Government of Ilocos Sur.

The 2015 research dissemination and e-echo seminar was successfully held on December 28-29, 2015. There were 15 papers presented during the forum, eight (8) new studies and seven (7) are masteral thesis and these are:

The 2nd National Academic Colloquium on ESTEM in Bicol University

Dr. Severino G. Alviento and Dr. Andres T. Malinnag, Jr. attended the 2nd National Academic Colloquium on Education, Science, Technology and Management (ESTEM) hosted by the Bicol University on October 19-21, 2015 at La Piazza Hotel and Convention Center, Legazpi City. Said Colloquium was enthemed “Upgrading Graduate Education through Improved Scientific Productivity”.

The conference was started in the morning of October 19, 2015 with the registration of the participants and posting of the competing posters inside the hall of the venue of the conference at La Piazza Hotel and Convention Center.

In his welcome remarks, Bicol University president Dr. Arnulfo M. Mascari?as said that Bicol University through the Graduate School is introducing an innovative recognition program for outstanding scientific manuscripts competing and submitted for the presentations. It is called the Colloquium Outstanding Paper Award or COPA. In contrast to a best paper award, the COPA recognizes an outstanding publishable paper manuscript on a particular field. In other words, Mascariñas added that the manuscript is not simply the best among the ones submitted for the colloquium, but it is the best or one of the best in the field as judged by the panel of evaluators. COPA will eventually become a regular highlight of the colloquium BU organizes, which will be self-sustaining because COPA winners and interested researchers, formed into an organization, will continue and man future COPA activities. For our search of excellence with relevance in research and educational programs, BU will genuinely strive to innovate, collaborate and match with the progressive others our efforts to see fruition of the international stature we aim for.

Meanwhile, CHED Commissioner Alex B. Brillantes, the first keynote speaker, gave his message and lecture through multimedia presentation.

Musical numbers were presented by the Bicol University Albay Magayon Dance Troupe and Bungcul Singers during the opening program as well as the presentations of Bicol University officials, guests and participants.

There were four thematic areas of the said conference and these are: a) Educational Development and Innovations, b) Biological and Health Sciences, Technology, Environment, Disaster Risk Reduction and Management, and Climate Change, c) Educational Leadership and Public Administration and d) Social Science, Culture and the Arts, Peace and Security Studies. The research papers that we presented which were included in the first session are entitled “The Proposed Creation of University in the Province of Ilocos Sur” by Dr. Severino G. Alviento, and “The MTB-MLE in the Field of Instruction: Snapshot Observations and Review of Practices in the Two DepEd Districts of Ilocos Sur” by Dr. Andres T. Malinnag, Jr.

On day 2, the 1st plenary speaker was Dr. John Andy S. Garcia, Dean and Professor Bro. Andrew Gonzalez College of Education, De La Salle University, Manila and gave lecture on the “Tightening the Graduate Research-Scientific Publishing Link: Experiences and Challenges in De La Salle University.” In the afternoon of the same day, Dr. Jose V. Camacho, Dean and Professor of University of the Philippines Los Baños, Laguna and lectured on the “Maintaining the Continuum Between Graduate Research and Scientific Productivity in UPLB”.

There were also fellowship dinner and cultural show in the evening of day 2 hosted by the Governor of Albay. The concurrent sessions were conducted in the morning and afternoon after the plenary lectures.

The closing and awarding ceremonies were done on the 3rd day of the conference. The study of Dr. Andres T. Malinnag was awarded with distinction.

CAS holds Medical Mission on Complementary and Alternative Medicine

The College of Arts and Sciences (CAS) under the leadership of the Dean, Dr. Severino G. Alviento, sponsored a Medical Mission on Complementary and Alternative Medicine (CAM) on October 23, 2015 at the Senior Citizen’s Center, Candon City, Ilocos Sur.

There was a total of 155 senior citizens coming from the different barangays of Candon City who received treatment in the said program.

This extension program was made possible through the joint initiative of the College of Arts and Sciences of North Luzon Philippines State College and the Romarinda College based in the University of Makati. Dr. Hae Deok Lee, President of the Romarinda College Inc. and Director of the Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine and Dr. Nenita S. Manongsong, Vice President for Academic Affairs and concurrent Department Head of the Center of Complementary and Alternative Medicine were the medical practitioners who came all the way to the province to provide services to the senior folks in Candon City.

The President of NLPSC, Dr. Elizabeth M. Gacusana and the City Administrator of Candon, Hon. Grace G. Singson showed their full support in this endeavour with their presence. Faculty members of the College of Arts and Sciences including the clinical instructors and their students helped in facilitating the said medical mission.

Complementary medicine refers to a group of diagnostic and therapeutic disciplines that are used together with conventional medicine. An example of a complementary therapy is using acupuncture in addition to usual care to help lessen a patient’s discomfort following surgery.

Alternative medicine is a variety of therapeutic or preventive health-care practices that are not typically taught or practiced in traditional communities and offer treatments that differ from standard medical practice.

Complementary medicine is different from alternative medicine. Whereas complementary medicine is used together with conventional medicine, alternative medicine is used in place of conventional medicine. An example of alternative therapy is using a special diet to treat cancer instead of undergoing surgery, radiation, or chemotherapy that has been recommended by a physician.

According to the National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine of the National Institutes of Health (NIH), complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) can include acupuncture, Alexander technique, aromatherapy, Ayurveda, biofeedback, chiropractic medicine, diet therapy, herbalism, holistic nursing, homeopathy, hynopsis, massage therapy, meditation, naturopathy, nutritional therapy, osteopathic manipulative therapy (OMT), Qi gong (internal and external Qigong), reflexology, Reiki, spiritual healing, Tai Chi, traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) and yoga.

Last December 13, 2015, the officer and members of the NLPSC ROTC Affiliated Unit attended the Joint Ceremonies, which are the Closing of Cadet Officers qualifying Course CL01-2015, and the Pinning of Ranks of advance Cadet Officers held at Ilocos Sur Polytechnic State College, Sta. Maria, Ilocos Sur. The said ceremony was graced by BGEN. LORETO G. RIRAO, a retired officer of the Philippine Army, from Narvacan, Ilocos Sur, as the guest of honor and speaker. Bgen. Rirao gave inspirational thoughts and encouragement to the graduates by citing his humble beginning until the day he retired marking him thirty-four (34) years in service in the Philippine Army. Present during the ceremony was then the incoming president of ISPSC, Dr. FRANCISCO LOPEZ, Asst. Commandant Maj. Alejandrino Delos Santos, PA (RES), ISPSC NSTP Director Mr. Benny B. Derige, NLPSC NSTP Coordinator Mrs. Aurelyn S. Mina, Capt. Wilfredo R. Dulay, PA and all ROTC Instructors.

The ROTC officers and members of ISPSC Cervantes, Tagudin, Candon, Sta. Maria Campus and NLPSC attended the joint closing ceremony. On the said event, the affiliated NLPSC ROTC Unit bagged all the awards. Mr. Benedict B. Morden, BS Crim 1 for being the top one COQC graduate received the proficiency Award. Ms. Joy B. Ragasa, BS Crim 1 was the Gabriela Silang awardee and Mr. Jerickson Castro, BS Crim 1, received the Bernardo Carpio Award. Parents, friends and relatives of the graduates were very happy to witness their sons and daughters received the pins as a symbol of their rank. This pin symbolizes their determination in achieving their dream to become an officer and future leader, their endurance in executing all the exercises, challenges, sacrifices and punishments as part of their training. Lastly, faith in God, because all these things will help them become productive member of the country. Congratulations!
